EPS votes to accept 6 firms for upcoming bond issue projects

During its regular meeting Monday evening, Enid Public Schools Board of Education voted on a list of six approved architects from which to choose for the upcoming bond issue projects.

The list of six architectural firms approved by the board are The Stacy Group of Edmond and Owasso, JHBR of Oklahoma City, LWPB of Oklahoma City, Corbin Associates of Enid, Easley Associates of Enid and AIP of Norman.

“Being on this list does not guarantee anyone a project,” said EPS Superintendent Shawn Hime. “They would still have to be awarded specific projects.”

“I think it’s very important that we use our local people as much as possible,” said board member Colleen Arnold. “They are the ones who helped vote the bond issue in.”

Hime said because local architectural firms can operate from Enid, they may have lower costs.

“I would expect them to have the lion’s share of work, but state law requires that those projects be competitively bid,” said Hime.

The board took some time during the meeting to honor several groups of people including the Duke University Talent Identification Program award winners, the recently National Board Certified teachers, two teachers who will be traveling to a teacher’s institute at Colonial Williamsburg and Enid High School Alumni Association.

The Duke University Talent Identification Program honors middle school students who take the ACT or the SAT exam and receive high scores.

“We’re proud of these students, we’re glad they’re here this evening and we know we’ll see them again before they graduate high school,” said Amber Graham Fitzgerald, EPS school and community relations director.

The Enid middle school students honored were Meredith Andrews, Robert Angleton, Keona Castor, Ryan Combs, Katie McGrath, Breanna Roebuck, Maggie Ruding, Austin Simcoe, Haley Spillers, Adams White, Zachary Willig, Casey Easter, Michele Palmer and Joy Suh.

Teachers who recently received National Board Certification status were Rhonda Harlow of Monroe Elementary School, Janet Jones of Garfield Elementary School and Cristin Ashcraft of Waller Middle School. All three were recognized at the meeting.

Garfield Elementary School teachers Linda Snodgrass and Kitty Herbel have been chosen to attend the 2010 Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in June and also were recognized at Monday’s meeting.

Enid High School Alumni Association was recognized for its work renovating classrooms at Enid High School.

During an executive session, the board approved the hiring of David Ogletree, Enid High School, and Lt. Col. David Morgan, Enid High School.

The board also approved re-hiring district administrators including Ruth Ann Erdner, Karl White, Vivian Bunch, Kelly Craig, Amber Graham Fitzgerald, Ron Garrison, Jim Gelsthorpe, Bill Mayberry, David McCune, Joanie McIntyre, Clayton Nolen, Chris Smith, Beverly James, Clark Koepping, Polly Maxwell, Kathy Edson, James Rainey, Jane Johnson, Karen Heizer, Jan Robinson, Kay Kiner, Ann Reding, Kim Jones, Scott Fitzgerald, Ron Few, Mark Luetkemeyer, John Garvie, Jon Mitchell, Jim Beierschmitt, Doug Stafford, Bill Word and Jarry Hillman.

Support staff approved for hire were Michael Ashline and Jamie Colemen.
