Main Street Enid picks up a pair of honors in OKC

Main Street Enid picked up two awards Tuesday night during the annual Oklahoma Main Street awards ceremony.

Enid won best interior design for Body Solid on Grand on the downtown Square, and also garnered an award for best creative fund-raiser for the stakeholder fundraiser. The ceremony was held at the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City.

Body Solid owners Scott and Cecilia Holle worked with Enid architects Ken Corbin and John Merz and consulted throughout the process with Main Street architect Ron Frantz.

Corbin said he gutted the building and designed a dynamic, kinetic area with new floor, ceilings and a physical fitness area look. Merz said it is designed around the physical fitness concept with a raised exercise area, a sprinting track down the middle, and a yoga room, along with a dressing area.

The stakeholder fundraiser asked 100 people to give $100 to support Main Street Enid. The $10,000 raised was given a matching grant by Park Avenue Thrift, adding $20,000 to the Main Street Enid program.

“Those funds are used to continue Main Street Enid’s local mission of making downtown the best it can be,” said Lindy Chambers, Main Street program manager.

Enid had finalists in seven categories, which also included Main Street Hero, Lynn Smith; Outstanding Image Promotion, Shop, Dine, Be Entertained; Best Retail Event, Morning on Main Street; Outstanding Web Presence; and Best Adaptive Reuse, Park Avenue Thrift.

“We’re very, very honored,” Chambers said.

Cherokee’s Main Street program also picked up two awards at the 25th anniversary award ceremony.

Cherokee won for Best Community Edu-cation/Public Awareness Program for the Cherokee Main Street phone book, and Best Facade Rehabilitation more than $10,000, for Cherokee City and County Library.

Lt. Gov. Jari Askins spoke at the ceremony, along with Secretary of Commerce and Tourism Natalie Shirley. State Rep. Mike Jackson and state Sen. Patrick Anderson were among the 16 Enid attendees.

Oklahoma City is hosting the 2010 National Main Street Conference in May. The conference brings 2,000 people to the state. Part of the conference includes tours to Oklahoma cities, and Enid will host a tour May 2.

Main Street Enid joined the Oklahoma Main Street system in 1994.
