Millions in construction

ENID — Last year was a good year to build anything from a garage to a storm cellar, or even a hotel in Enid, as the city recorded nearly $100 million in construction projects.

A survey of city of Enid building permits for the year showed commercial construction totaling more than $82.5 million. Residential construction stayed strong at nearly $13 million.

City of Enid Code Administration official Toby Pritchett said the biggest difference in 2010 and 2011 permit totals came in the commercial segment.

Building permits issued in 2010 totaled $30 million, compared to about $96 million in 2011, he said.

“In 2010, you have 72 single-family dwellings showing $18 million. In 2011, it’s about $12 million. That’s $5 million lower,” Pritchett said. “It’s a redirection of dollars from residential to commercial building.”

Commercial construction included $18 million for the Enid Renaissance Project event center, being built downtown adjacent to Cherokee Strip Conference Center, as well as $20 million total for two new Enid Public Schools facilities — Garfield Elementary School, 600 E. Elm, and Prairie View Elementary School, Willow and Garland.

Other big projects approved are the 102-unit Tuscana Apartments on West Chestnut, with a price tag of $6 million, and the 86-room Springhill Suites hotel on West Garriott, with a value of $4 million.

Permits for 10 stores and customer service facilities totaled more than $2 million. Permits for more than $12 million in commercial repairs, remodeling and additions also were approved by the city, as was $1.6 million in commercial storage buildings.

Commercial garage and carport permits totaling $15,490 were issued.

Residential construction, which included Tuscana Apartments, also included permits for 19 single-family dwellings — a total cost of more than $4.5 million — and three duplexes at a cost of $290,000. Permits for more than $1 million in residential remodeling and repairs, including additions, were approved.

In addition to residential and commercial permits, more than $1 million in miscellaneous permits were issued, including nine swimming pool permits totaling $460,000, and 106 storm shelters totaling $345,000. Fifty-five sign permits were issued totaling more than $233,804.
