ENID — Students at Emerson Middle School will have to relearn where their classes are today, when they return to a building where the page is being turned in ongoing renovations.
Throughout the fall semester, classrooms on the third floor were out of commission because of construction work taking place there. On Tuesday, furniture and classroom supplies were taken back to the completed third floor.
Reading teacher David Kinnamon said he’s delighted with the work on his classroom.
“I feel like I’ve just moved to Beverly Hills,” Kinnamon said. “Obviously, I’m thrilled and very grateful to be here. It will assist me in being able to teach.”
Tyler Bowen, information technology support employee, finalized the work on SMART Boards at Emerson on Tuesday.
Doug Stafford, Emerson principal, showed off the new school offices, now moved to the first floor of the building.
Previously, the offices were on the second floor.
“You have security concerns with that, plus it makes it difficult to find who you need to find,” said Amber Fitzgerald, school and community relations director for Enid Public Schools.
Now, the building’s second floor is being worked on. The former office area will be renovated into a computer lab and classroom during the spring semester.
Demolition in the second-floor auditorium began Tuesday.
Stafford praised the “architectural integrity” of the design of the renovation work on the building constructed in 1923.
Band and orchestra teachers Gayla Heinrichs and David Toelle spent Tuesday setting up the new music rooms in the Emerson annex building.
Work at Emerson is part of Enid’s $99.4 million, three-year school renovation project. The project now is about halfway through, with completion on the last schools scheduled for August 2013
