Moving right along: Number of Enid school renovation projects slated for August completion

ENID — Work on Enid schools is moving right along with the first completion deadline in two months.

Adams, Coolidge, Glenwood, Hoover, Hayes and Taft elementary schools, as well as D. Bruce Selby Stadium and the Enid High School track, all are scheduled to be completed by August.

Robert Sands, program manager for Carter and Associates — the management firm working with Enid Public Schools on the project — said most of the work is moving forward as expected.

“Garfield (Elementary School) is the only one that’s ahead of schedule,” Sands said. “The others are all right on schedule and moving along as anticipated.”

At Adams, the steel structure for the new cafeteria is on site and a portion of the roof framing is in place. New sidewalks have been laid in front of the existing building. Handrails, doors, the display case and other interior wood items are being refinished.

At Coolidge, the renovation of the south wing is 95 percent complete. The metal roof on the two north buildings is done and portable buildings used as classrooms for Coolidge students last school year are being moved to Enid High for the fall semester.

At Glenwood, the middle classroom wing is 98 percent complete, and the contractor is working in the main entrance, media center, office and several classrooms. Currently, ceilings, lights, flooring and a new secured entrance are being installed. The finishing touches are being put on exterior work, drainage and sidewalks.

Hoover’s north classroom wing is 95 percent complete. The west wing classroom area is in demolition state and asbestos abatement continues in the south wing. New concrete driveways and west parking are completed.

The demolition of existing classrooms at Hayes is finished and electricians and plumbers are working in the building. The discovery of asbestos in the cafeteria and some slate ceiling tiles has slowed progress. The removal of the asbestos ceiling tile begins this week as work continues in other areas of the building.

Demolition of hallways and some of the classrooms at Taft is finished and the repair of the south external walls is done.

At Selby Stadium, the concrete repairs and seal coating of the home side is done, as is installation of one section of new benches. Next week, construction of the new press box is to begin. The concrete work on the visitor’s side is under way.

The Enid High School track has been resurfaced and warranty work still is being done. That job is expected to be completed by the end of this month.

The next big completion deadline is August 2012. On that schedule are Emerson Middle School, Enid High, Garfield, Prairie View Elementary School and Waller Middle School.

At Emerson, demolition work in the annex building and the third and fourth floors has started. Classroom furniture has been relocated to the gymnasium. When school begins in the fall, eight classes will meet in the Lincoln Academy building and four in portables.

Subcontractor bids for work at Enid High were opened last week. Construction is scheduled to begin next week.

Garfield is ahead of schedule. Door and window frames are being installed and block walls are being set. Steel roof trusses are on-site and the new storm waterline and sewer tap are being installed.

Site preparation at Prairie View is rolling along, with the play field and drainage near completion. The dirt work where the building will stand is completed and the construction of the building soon will begin.

At Waller, the east wing classrooms and the auditorium are in renovation stage. New duct work for the heating and cooling system is being installed in the east wing. New piping is being installed under the first floor. Work will begin next week on the new student driveway to the north.
