Thousands of kites were in the skies over End this week as part of an attempt to break a world record and raise awareness about the power of wind.
The event, W.O.W. Kites Over Enid, attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most kites in the air at one time. It was also a fundraiser for Enid Habitat for Humanity and held in conjunction with a wind energy summit at Autry Technology Center.
Even though they are still tabulating the results of a potential world record, organizers believe the event featured the most kites in the air at one time in North America.
"It has continued to amaze me how one little idea can continue to grow into total community involvement, excitement and enthusiasm," Stanley Hicks of Enid Habitat for Humanity, tells The Oklahoman. "We did this as a fundraiser and to promote wind energy in northwestern Oklahoma. The W.O.W. stands for wheat, oil and wind."
According to The Oklahoman, across the field from the kites, at the James W. Strate Center for Business Development, the wind energy summit attracted 37 wind industry executives from 15 companies.
Organizers believe Enid and Garfield County not only provide a great location for wind generation, but also for manufacturing.
