Hibbett Sports, a national retailer, soon will be a new tenant at Sunset Plaza Shopping Center in Enid.
The store plans expand and open in early 2011 and will employ eight full time and part-time employees.
Buddy Nicholas, of Nicholas Commercial Real Estate, said the store will be in the remaining space of the former Goody’s store, located in the center of the Plaza buildings.
Nicholas’ company owns the shopping center, which is located at Cleveland and Garriott
“They plan to open a Hibbett SuperStore. They are leasing 16,000 square feet,” Nicholas said.
The store will offer sporting goods exclusively and will add merchandise beyond what is found in the current 4,000-square-foot store.
Nicholas said the Birmingham, Ala.-based company plans other uses for the existing store.
“(Enid) has been short on sporting goods, and this will fill a gap there,” Nicholas said.
The negotiations have taken about a year, he said.
“This all resulted from us attending the ICSC, International Council of Shopping Center conferences,” he said.
Steve Warkentin, owner of Enid Christian Bookstore, also located in Sunset Plaza, said he looks forward to the addition.
“We’re always thrilled to add a quality tenant like Hibbets ... this will only enhance out shopping experience at Sunset Plaza,” he said.
Hibbett Sports operates more than 750 full-line sporting goods stores in small to mid-sized markets. Most are located in the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.
The primary store format is 5,000 square-foot in dominant strip centers and enclosed malls.
